KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
It's best to be prepared before you go on this moderate to intense 10.1 mile hike. First of all, drive into the State Park and do pay the $8 entrance fee. This will give you an opportunity to pick up a map, check waterfall conditions with the park ranger, and drive all the way to the Porter Family Picnic Area in order to save yourself a few extra miles. Once you park, hop on the trail behind the locked gate. Continue on to the Loma Prieta Grade Trail. That's right, you'll be hiking right along the fault line! When the path forks, take the Bridge Creek Trail. I highly recommend taking a rest stop at the Bridge Creek Historic Site because the last mile of your hike will be spent scrambling back and forth over rocks and trees across the creek. I lost count of the number of times we crossed the water on our way to the falls and we went in September! If you are visiting in the spring, I recommend you pack water shoes, extra socks, and a quick dry towel, if you want to keep your feet dry. There were serval times we thought the trail ended, but we keep charging on... and to our delight, the journey ended with a majestic 125 foot waterfall.
